"I can fol ow you home," Sheridan offered. "Make sure you don't get into trouble."

Their gazes held. El iot was sure the offer was an innocent one, but his reaction to it wasn't. He would just love to get into trouble with Sheridan.

He coughed and put a hand up to hide his flushing face. "That's okay, I'm sure you've got things to do."

"Not real y."

El iot stared at him. He couldn't work out what Sheridan wanted. Sheridan started to look uncomfortable under his scrutiny.

"What? You're looking at me like I'm up to no good."

El iot dipped his head. Sheridan had made it plain he didn't want him, so this offer must have been innocent, unless Sheridan was looking for another cheap rol in the hay with no strings attached. What with it being the season of goodwil and al .

"I'm just trying to let you see I'm not the arsehole you've always thought I am."

El iot lifted his head. "Bit late for that now."

Sheridan blushed. He nodded slowly. "Yeah, you're right. I fucked this one up good and proper, didn't I, El iot?"

He pushed open the door and walked into the dark night, leaving El iot looking after him in shock.

Sheridan cursed under his breath as he trudged out to his car. He cursed the fact he'd brought the BMW to work today—useless in the snow—instead of the jeep. He cursed his behaviour towards El iot more. Sheridan didn't lack such self-awareness that he didn't know El iot had thought he was an arsehole for the last two years, so why try and put it right now, after he'd rejected El iot in the worst possible way? Why try and make El iot see the man beneath and soften to him when he'd already told him they would never go anywhere?

What the hel was the matter with him?

But El iot's opinion of him suddenly mattered when it never had before. He opened the passenger door to pick his ice-scraper from the floor inside and then slammed it shut in a fit of temper. What a prick he was. He started to scrape the snow from his front window swiftly. He hadn't felt so miserable since Scott left. Misery consumed him whole and left a bitter lump of self-pity in his throat.

He glanced around as El iot started to scrape his own car a few feet away. He tried to speak, tried to quantify what he'd said inside, but no words would come. El iot resolutely avoided his gaze.

Sheridan got in the car and started the engine, switching on the windscreen heaters. He gazed at El iot longingly in his side mirror.

Thick snow blanketed the ground, and the going up to El iot's house was tough. Once at home, he greeted Mickey, Henry, and Smokey, fed them, and put a meal in the microwave. He took a hot bath afterwards and then settled down in front of the TV. With eyes glazed, he remembered the way Sheridan had held him with one strong arm and his passionate mouth against his neck.
